Extraordinary Ability Green Cards for Artists
The Client
Victor Mané Rodriguez is an exceptional tattoo artist, which is an unusual profile for an immigration case: a decade of trophies from tattoo conventions across Spain and the Netherlands, and a fast-growing studio in Brooklyn that critics were already comparing to an art gallery. Our task was to translate that record into a self-petitioned green card (Form I-140) under the EB-1A extraordinary ability category, so that he could pursue permanent residence on his own merits, with no employer sponsor required.
Building the Record
Mr. Mané Rodriguez’s competitive résumé does most of the talking. Between 2016 and 2018, he took home seven awards at major European tattoo conventions, capped by First Prize in Realism and the Best of Show title, the top honor of the event, at the Inner Ink Tattoo Convention in the Netherlands, where he competed against more than 400 international artists. He also won First Prize at Graumfest Granada and placed at both the Sevilla Tattoo Convention and Expo Tattoo Estepona, two of the most closely watched tattoo events on the Spanish circuit.
That reputation followed him across the Atlantic. In 2021 he co-founded Minimal NYC, and the studio has since drawn coverage from several media outlets with a combined monthly readership above 7.1 million. One profile put it bluntly: the studio runs “more like an art gallery than a conventional tattoo shop.”
By 2025, organizers were seeking him out rather than the other way around. Villain Arts, the largest tattoo convention operator in the country, brought him on as a judge for its Houston and St. Louis Tattoo Arts Festivals, and the Whiskey Throttle Fair Tattoo Convention in Pennsylvania invited him for the same role, appointments that only go to artists whose peers already consider them an authority.
How the Petition Was Framed
USCIS requires evidence across at least three of ten regulatory criteria for extraordinary ability. We built the petition around six:
- Nationally and internationally recognized awards — seven wins across four European conventions between 2016 and 2018
- Published coverage in major media, reaching a combined monthly audience above 7.1 million readers
- Judging appointments evaluating other artists’ work at Villain Arts events and the Whiskey Throttle Fair
- Work displayed at distinguished artistic exhibitions and showcases at major international conventions
- A leading, critical role as co-founder and lead artist of Minimal NYC
- A salary placing him among the top 10% of tattoo artists nationwide
We paired the documentary evidence with opinion letters from several industry professionals with international standing, plus formal reference letters from convention organizers, including Villain Arts founder Troy Timpel and Whiskey Throttle Fair organizer Mike Morelli. Their letters spoke directly to how competitive the judge selection process is and to the caliber of the events where Mr. Mané Rodriguez had already won.
The Outcome
The petition was filed with USCIS in July 2025 seeking classification as an alien of extraordinary ability, and it was approved shortly afterward. Mr. Mané Rodriguez then filed for adjustment of status inside the United States and has since received his green card, along with green cards for his wife and children.

Competition wins, press coverage, judging invitations, and studio leadership only carry weight when they’re organized to speak directly to the regulatory criteria, which is exactly what made the difference in this case.
